Inside the manual

The Ninja Manual

Behind the scenes of Lone Path’s AI short films

How we go from still images to short films. One film broke out, and plenty went wrong along the way. A guide to making the films, not to fighting in them.

  1. 1

    What viewers actually respond to

4 lessons · Four lessons from making and reviewing these films

  2. 2

    The traps

7 traps · Each of these cost us real work

  3. 3

    The system

6 steps · In the order it has to happen

Write the last line first

Before you make a single image, write the sentence the film is for. That is the line where the film turns from the characters to the viewer.

If you cannot write it, the film has nothing to say, so do not generate it. This step costs nothing. It is the most reliable check we have found against making something that is only impressive.

What you are agreeing to

  • You confirm your address with the button in the confirmation email from Lone Path. The manual opens straight after that. Confirming is what unlocks it.
  • After that: occasional production notes when something has been measured and turned out to be worth knowing, including when it contradicts the manual.
  • Irregular. A few times a month at most, and nothing when there is nothing. No sequence, no pitch. Unsubscribe link in every email.

One address, used only to send the manual and those notes. Not sold, not shared, and never used to build a profile.

The list is held by the email service used to send it. Every email carries an unsubscribe link, which stops further email.

Recurring characters

Character dossiers

The two leads carried across the ninja films. Other warriors have their own arcs; these are the pair the page is built on.

Jiro, masked and armed, standing in a bamboo grove at night as a shaft of cold light falls through the stems.
Subject: JiroPLATE 01

Recurring character

Jiro

One of the two recurring leads of the ninja films.

Most of his screen time is waiting, watching and moving without being seen. The films are built around what he does not do.

Suzu balanced on a moss-covered stone lantern, one knee down, in a cedar forest lit by pale shafts.
Subject: SuzuPLATE 02

Recurring character

Suzu

The other half of the pair.

She carries the objective as often as he does, and the films tend to give her the high ground and the first look at what is coming.
